I was first introduced to NOW Foods a few years ago, but knew very little about the company, their philosophy, the vast product line, and the level of quality assurance and testing that goes into each and every one of their products.
As I got to know the NOW Foods CEO, Jim Emme, last week, my eyes were opened to the core values of NOW Foods and their approach to empowering people to live healthier lives. As Jim asked us if we trust what’s actually in our food, I didn’t know how to respond. “Of course I knew what I was putting into my body”, I thought, but then I realized, I actually have no idea what I’m putting into my body. Sure I know that I had a baked sweet potato, turkey burger patty, summer squash, tomato, onions, pickles, and ketchup yesterday for lunch, but was I confident that all that was in my burger and ketchup were the ingredients listed on the products label?
In my lifetime, I’ve gone from being an 80’s and 90’s processed food junkie to a woman who strives to balance out eating both whole foods and processed foods. I strive to limit the foods that will have a less than positive impact on my body, but through nutrition counseling, I’ve learned to enjoy all foods in moderation and to not have guilt when doing so. What I haven’t thought about though are the actual ingredients in the products I am eating. I haven’t thought about where the ingredients I’m eating come from, if the ingredients on the label are all that is in the food I am eating, and if the ingredients I’m consuming will have a positive effect on my body. I just haven’t thought about it.
What I realized quickly was that I either could spend an absurd amount of time each day researching the individual foods my family and I are eating or I could invest more time learning about companies who ensure that the only ingredients in a food and/or supplement is what is stated on the label. Too often I hear about foods that have been tainted with some bacteria or substance that doesn’t belong, like Arsenic. I mean, holy moly! Why are we ok with consuming these hidden substances? Realizing this made me recognize the need to invest more in not only my diet, but my family’s diet. I have the opportunity to make sure that anything my husband or daughter eat is intended to be eaten and I am thankful to have found a company like NOW Foods.
During my time at the NOW Foods headquarters and manufacturing plant, I learned that NOW Foods is in full compliance with the Food and Drug Administration’s Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP). cGMPs are published federal requirements for companies engaging in the manufacture, packaging, labeling, or holding of dietary supplements. I learned just how important this is and to be honest, I had never heard of it. The standards established by cGMPs are important, but I think I’ve been ignorant to the fact that companies may not adhere to these standards. I’ve trusted brands at surface level and my trip to NOW Foods showed me that I have to care more. I have to look more into the companies I am buying products from. I have to care more about what my family and I are eating, what we’re putting on our skin, and what ingredients are in our supplements. I fully recognize that I have to start small, but NOW Foods got me thinking and I am learning how important it is to buy from a company that ensures that the only ingredients you are putting in your body are the ingredients on the label.
NOW Foods, whether building their Natural Foods, Essentials Oils, body care products, or supplement lines insists on choosing only the best ingredients and are committed to testing and safety. While NOW Foods is the first plant I have visited, the testing of their products in specialized labs truly sets them apart from other natural product companies.
NOW Foods tests ingredients of all of their products directly on the truck it arrives on and only allows ingredients/products into the warehouse if it has passed all standards. The product is then tested again in the warehouse, in the various labs run by NOW Foods biochemists and chemists, and before the products are sent to customers. NOW Foods truly tests all products at every stage of the manufacturing process. If a product fails any of their quality and accuracy tests, at any point, the ingredients are either sent back to their original source or the product is removed from the NOW Foods inventory.
NOW Foods is doing it right and I am really excited to start incorporating their products into my daily routine and my family’s diet and hygiene. I knew about the supplements made by NOW Foods, but I had no idea about their essential oils line, beauty line, sports nutrition line, natural foods line, and pet health line. They have far more products than I ever realized and they are adding in more each month. So far, I’ve tried their oils, slender sticks, and their amazing natural snacks. NOW Foods has provided me with a number of products to try and I am so excited to giveaway the same product bundle to one of my readers here in the United States!
