Getting Back Into Running After Winter

Running is one of those activities that gets easier and more enjoyable with time, but getting back into running after winter can be tough.  Those first few weeks can make you question why you’ve picked up running again, but I can’t think of a better time to get back into running than spring time!  After a long winter, the fresh air, blue skies, and flowers are just so invigorating!

As much as I’d like to run year round, since I picked up running in 2010 I’ve been more of a spring and fall runner.  Running before or after work in the winter just isn’t realistic and I personally don’t enjoy running in the hot and humid summers.  I’m more of an summer evening stroll with the family kind of girl.

As I look towards the spring ahead, I’m excited to get back into running!  Not only do I need some fresh air, but I’m craving the time to be outside and to clear my head.  Running gives me time to think and after a winter indoors, I’m looking forward to the time outside.  I also miss running with my husband and am looking forward to that time with him!

Getting started is always a challenge, mentally and physically, but here are the steps I’m taking to get ready.

1.  Gear up!   I think it’s important to have the right gear.  I bought a new pair of capri pants (Power Up Capri from Athleta), am loving my new Saucony’s from Amazon, and have my Runkeeper app ready to go.  I personally love running with a handheld water bottle and use a full water belt when I do longer runs.

2. Sign up for a race!  As much as I’d love to run just to run, I personally need a little motivation.  Signing up for races gets me into the groove and provides the motivation I need.  There are quite a few races here in the DC area  this spring and I plan to sign up for 2.  Be sure to look up the races in your area!

3. Mark your calendar! I love going for a run on the weekends, but running once a week usually isn’t enough for me to get into a good routine and to be comfortable with running again. Running 2-3 times a week always seems to work best, so I like setting up a mid-week run and a weekend run.

4. Make it a date! I used to hate running with other people because of my insecurities, but I’ve learned that if you find the right people, it can be really, really enjoyable! Maybe that sounds horrible, but for me, certain people give me anxiety because they’re just too fast for me. I think it’s important to find someone who runs at the same pace as you, spurs up good conversation, and ultimately is a friend. I’m  grateful to have found a few running buddies over the years.  They make running fun!

5. Take it easy! I have to remind myself to take it easy and to ease back into running.  It’s important to take it easy and to be kind to yourself as you transition back after a long winter.  I am a huge fan of run/walk and find that intervals make getting back into running easier.

6. Track it!  I love being able to see what I’ve accomplished.  I enjoy writing down how far I’ve run, my times, and how I felt.  A few years ago I bought a running journal and still use it today.

7. Just have fun!! Simple as that!
