As I work on losing weight I’m also working towards finding a healthy balance in each area of my life. The balance between family and work, food and exercise, and indulgences and sacrifices for example. Living a balanced life is my ultimate goal, with weight loss being a piece of that pie.
I often feel like I have to be all or nothing with dieting. While I think you can see the fruits of major sacrifices pretty quickly, I often find that it backfires down the road. If I don’t allow myself any sweets here and there, a day will come when I binge on desserts and throw caution into the wind. Instead, I’ve been balancing my sweets with sweat. I create new workouts and new ways to enjoy some of my favorite treat, all with the goal of living a balanced life.
Yesterday I created a 25 minute Tabata workout I could do right in my living room. It was perfect because I burned almost 200 calories and was able to entertain the baby while doing it.
Tabata workouts are great because you can do just about any exercise! I use the Tabata Pro App on my iPhone, which allows me to choose my prep time, work time, rest time, number of cycles, and number of Tabatas. For last night’s workout I decided to do 8 cycles of each Tabata with 10 seconds of rest in between each cycle and 10 seconds to prepare before the next Tabata.
A Tabata workout is simple. You choose an exercise for each Tabata. You will then do your first Tabata (Jumping Jacks for example) for 8 cycles (20 seconds of work and 10 seconds of rest, 8 times) before moving on to the next Tabata (squats for example). You’ll repeat this until you get through all Tabatas (6 in this case).
Tabata 1 – Jumping Jacks
Tabata 2 – Squats
Tabata 3 – Bicycle Crunches
Tabata 4 – Burpees
Tabata 5 – Sumo Squats
Tabata 6 – Crunches
The workout was just 25 minutes long and was such an easy way to get a good workout in at home.
An incredibly easy sweet to make are these Reduced Guilt Coffee Brownies! All you need is one box of Trader Joe’s Reduced Guilt Brownie mix (or the No Pudge Fudge Brownie Mix) and 1 container of Dannon’s Coffee yogurt (or whatever yogurt you enjoy – 2/3 cup).
Simply combine the mix and the yogurt with a spoon and then divide it evenly among a muffin tray (makes 12 brownie muffins). Bake at 350 for 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
These brownies are 134 calories each or 3PP!
