Neal and I are thrilled to be expecting our first child in early September! I am currently 12 weeks pregnant and am absolutely overjoyed!
How did I find out?
When Neal and I returned from our cruise on December 21, I was really hoping we’d be pregnant. I didn’t want to overreact but I was eager to take a test. On Christmas Eve I bought two boxes of pregnancy tests and proceeded to take 2 tests, one of each brand. Both were negative, which really bummed me out.
On Christmas Day I felt absolutely horrible. I was sleepy and quite nauseous, which again made me think I was pregnant. I decided to take one more test, hoping the test would explain my symptoms. The test was once again negative and it was in that moment that I realized I needed to relax. I did a little research and decided to wait at least a week before using my last pregnancy test.
The next day I woke up feeling absolutely awful. I went to Barre class at 8:30AM and couldn’t wait to get home. Despite my decision to wait, I just had a feeling I was indeed pregnant. I took the last test, watching it develop. After about a minute the control line showed up but a second line didn’t appear. I put the stick on the counter and took Theodore out for a walk to clear my head.
When we returned from our walk I took a look at the test and sure enough, there were two lines! I started crying immediately and couldn’t believe that I was indeed pregnant.
How did I tell Neal?
As it was the day after Christmas, I knew I could tell Neal by giving him a late present. Neal went into work on the 26th, so it gave me plenty of time to come up with an idea. I immediately thought of making fake football tickets to the Iowa vs Maryland game mid October, including a ticket for the baby in the envelope.
I created three tickets, one of which said Baby Rozendaal on it. A little after Neal got home, I nonchalantly told Neal that I forgot to give him a Christmas present the day before. Neal read the card, thinking nothing of it and then looked through the three tickets. Even when he read Baby Rozendaal, he didn’t get it. I gave him the “Yes, I’m being serious” look and Neal was like “Are you serious? Are you serious?” He was incredibly excited and overjoyed for the news!
I made us dinner that night at home and we enjoyed an evening of talking about our future. It was a really special day!
How did I keep it a secret?
Neal and I agreed that we wanted to keep the pregnancy a secret until we had the first sonogram. Neal gave me the blessing of telling my sister, because he totally knew I had to tell her! A few people found out along the way, but for the most part we kept our lips sealed.
Neal and I told both sets of parents the weekend my parents were in town back in January (I was about 8 weeks). As we saw the heart beating at 6 weeks, we felt secure in telling our parents before we hit the second trimester.
Keeping things hush hush here on Coffee Cake and Cardio was really difficult. Moreso because I blog a lot about weight loss, my fitness, and my eats. I tried to keep things light and fresh but honestly struggled some days to blog. I wanted to share about my life and what was really going on, but I knew it was best to keep things under wraps for a while.
Sharing our pregnancy with everyone yesterday was a lot of fun and I truly appreciate all of the encouragement and support! Neal and I are incredibly excited!!
