It’s always amazing to me how different life can be depending on what time of the year it is. As I work in education, I tend to function off of a fall, spring, and summer calendar. While the fall is busy, it’s pretty consistent. The spring on the flip side is all over the place! Each day varies, totally wrecking my pretty fall and summer routine.
This “spring”, it has become pretty clear that I’ve just got to get my workouts in before the work day starts. While I have the best of intentions to workout during the workday, 99.9% of the time it just does not happen. After a long day, the last thing I really want to do is head to the gym. I’ve worked hard to get PM workouts in these past few weeks, but it has been tough. I’m still adjusting, but I think joining the 5AM workout club is the way to go!
The reality is, working out at 5AM really starts the night before. I have to eat a good dinner, lay out my workout clothes (or sleep in them), shut off my cell phone early, and be in bed by 10PM (10:30PM at the latest).
After waking up at 4:50AM, I change into my workout clothes and mix together some Spark. By 5AM, I was out the door and on my way to the gym.
I’m a cardio first, weight lifting second kind of girl, so this morning I busted out 30 minutes on the elliptical before lifting weights.
I started off with 4 sets of back squats, followed by wall squats, push press, curl and press, and calf raises. By 6:05AM I was out the door and headed back home.
The next key to making 5AM work is to refuel by body right after my workouts. This morning I started out with some fresh Apple, Celery, and Carrot juice.
I juiced 1 apple, 1 1/2 cups of baby carrots, and 2 stalks of celery. I absolutely loved it and will definitely be making this juice at home again!
Alongside the juice I had two eggs and an everything bagel thin, which was the right balance of protein and carbs post workout.
After breakfast I showered, got ready for work, packed my lunch, and was out the door by 7:10AM. 5AM can be rough, but I’m learning that my preparation can really make or break a morning. I’m sure there will be some rough mornings and even days when I push my workouts back, but my overall goal is to make 5AM workouts work!
