Friday morning, after a wonderful evening in Boston, I headed over to Reebok Headquarters with my fellow FitFluential Ambassadors. I was beyond thrilled to be at Reebok, to learn more about their history, and to see what they have in store for 2013!
After a small breakfast and an overview of what our day at Reebok would hold, we all headed over to Reebok Crossfit One for a crossfit WOD (Workout of the Day).
Reebok Crossfit One is located at Reebok Headquarters and is only open to Reebok employees, making our opportunity to workout there quiet a treat. If that weren’t enough, we were also going to be given the opportunity to workout with some of the fittest people on earth!
As Austin Malleolo, head of Reebok Crossfit One, shared, 2 bloggers would be paired up with one professional crossfit athlete for the day’s WOD.
Austin took some time to introduce each athlete and then gave us a breakdown of the WOD.
In teams of 3 (2 bloggers and 1 professional athlete) we would need to complete the following WOD for time:
Run 200m each (relay)
150 Thrusters (45#/30# dumb bells)
100 Chest-to-bar pull-ups
50 Box Jumps (30″/24″)
Run 200m each (relay)
1 person works
1 person holds 115 pounds in static position
1 person rests
** If the 115 pound bar hits the ground, the team is required to do 10 burpees each!
After a thorough warm-up, the athletes picked their teams grade school style, picking one blogger at a time. Christy Phillips, a local DC crossfit athlete, picked both me and Jess for her team!
Before the workout began, Christy took some time to coach each of us on our technique and showed me how to do ring pulls instead of pull-ups. Christy was a fantastic coach and helped me to conquer my fear of box jumps. The 1:1 time with Christy flew by for Jess and I and before we knew it we were all lining up for our 200 meter run!
After each of us ran, we ran inside and began cranking out the squat thrusters. Our tactic was for the person doing the exercise to do as many reps as possible and then to rotate to resting after they were done. The person resting would then move to holding the 115 pound bar and the person holding the bar would move to the exercise.
We continued this rotation through the 150 squat thrusters, then onto the 100 pull-ups, and lastly to the 50 box jumps. Thankfully I was able to utilize my strength and ended up just holding the 115 pound bar for Jess as she cranked out the remainder of the box jumps.
A final 200 meter run each closed out our workout, which in the end took us 20:50 to complete.
I felt like a beast afterwards. My arms were burning, my heart was pounding, I was sweating profusely, and I didn’t want it any other way!! To make the experience even more spectacular, all of the men took off their shirts after the workout. I mean look at those abs!!
Seeing all of the athletes and bloggers work together to reach their fitness goals was a perfect snapshot of exactly what crossfit is all about. Everyone was so happy afterwards and proud of everything they had accomplished, both as individuals and as a team!
I also fell in love with Anne Marie McKay, a 74 year old Reebok employee and Crossfit One member, who did the full WOD with one of the teams! I hope when I am her age I’m able to deadlift 75 pounds and do a WOD like this! She’s amazing!
After cooling down we took some time to mingle and to get to know the athletes better.
I loved being able to talk to Christy about her training and crossfit story. Christy, a school nurse, trains at a local DC Crossfit box and works hard to balance out her work life and fitness goals. To me, Christy is a woman who lives a no excuses life and works hard to reach her goals. She is a true inspiration!
This WOD, along with last weekend’s football practice, killed my arms but you know what they say… no pain, no gain!
A huge thank you to Reebok Crossfit One for this crazy/awesome workout and to each of the crossfit athletes for inspiring me to put my fitness goals first. I will never forget this workout, nor will my arms.
