Last week I traveled up to Pittsburgh for the CRLA (College Reading and Learning Association) Annual Conference. I was last in Pittsburgh in 2013, my rookie year playing for the DC Divas, but wasn’t able to see much of the city. I was really looking forward to this conference professionally and was excited to see more of Pittsburgh in between.
It was quite rainy the 4 days I was in town, but it was fun seeing part of downtown over lunch and each evening. My co-worker and I started our stay in Pittsburgh with a lunner at Primanti Brothers.
I was glad we went, as it was recommended by everyone we talked to, but I’ll be honest, it wasn’t anything spectacular. I ordered the pastrami sandwich, which to me was just a big french fries sandwich with a little meat on it. I really loved the coleslaw though and the fries and meat were yummy. Wednesday night we attended a conference reception at the Heinz Center, which was amazing!
Thursday was our first full day at the conference and we ran over to Pork and Beans for lunch, which was absolutely amazing! I loved the atmosphere, the service, and the food! It was so, so, so good!
We started our lunch with 2 delicious appetizers. We ordered the honey tabasco wings and the pimento cheese. Both were absolutely delicious, but I just loved the pimento cheese. The cheese was served along side pickled jalapenos, housemade pickles, and picked cabbage. It was so flavorful and a great start to lunch.
I then ordered the brisket sandwich with no sides. The brisket was tender, smokey, and very filling. This Texas girl loved it! Thursday night after the conference we walked downtown and grabbed dinner at a local restaurant (I don’t remember the name). I enjoyed a salad with sweet potato crusted chicken, feta, and house made croutons.
Friday morning I woke up extra early and got a great workout in before the day got going. It was nice using the elliptical and then lifting weights before grabbing my regular breakfast (oatmeal – for lactation and coffee).
Friday we ran over to Burgatory for lunch and holy moly, so good! We each designed our own burgers and they were delicious! The meat was juicy and I loved all the topping you could add at no extra cost. A great lunch spot in Pittsburgh!
We closed out our time in Pittsburgh Friday night with dinner in the Strip District at Smallman Galley. This was such a unique restaurant, as the seating is first come, first serve and you can essentially order from 5 different “restaurants”.
I ordered a Banh mi sandwich with lemongrass chicken from Banhmilicious. It was an incredibly flavorful sandwich and hit the spot! After 3 heavy meals, this was a nice light meal.
After the conference ended Saturday we drove back to DC. The foliage was beautiful and it was nice having time to talk through all we learned at the conference.
Being away from my family, especially baby Kinnick, was really hard, but I’m so glad I got to attend this conference. I was really proud of myself for exclusively pumping for 3 days and finding time to relax between the conference and teleworking. It was a great trip and I was oh so happy to get home Saturday afternoon!
