Over the past couple of weeks I’ve been making myself a lot smoothies. My favorite smoothies always include peanut butter, but nut butters of any kind are big trigger foods for me. The reality is, I just can’t control myself with them.
A few months ago I started purchasing Jif to Go peanut butter containers, which worked well for me as they were pre-portioned. Seeing how little peanut butter you get for 250 calories made it not worth it in my brain. It was the first time EVER that peanut butter sat in my house unopened for over a week.
2 weeks ago I decided to use PB2 and Just Great Stuff in my smoothies instead. I’ve always been a big fan of peanut powder and realized I didn’t really need all the extra calories just to get the peanut butter flavor in my smoothies. Peanut powder is great, but it is expensive compared to make peanut butters.
This past weekend while grocery shopping, my plan was to buy more PB2, but that was quickly trumped by the awesome sales going on in the peanut butter aisle. I thought to myself, “Ashley you can do this. Your diet doesn’t have to be ruined just because you have a jar of peanut butter in the house!”
I threw TWO jars in my basket,
just for a little variety who knows why I bought two, but by Sunday afternoon they were already tempting me. “What’s just one spoonful??”, I thought to myself. By Monday I realized that the temptation was just too great, so you know what I did?? I THREW THEM AWAY!!
You see, nut butters are just too tempting for me. They wreck my diet, every time I buy them. I like to think I can control myself and use portion control, but the reality is, I still eat too much. A spoonful here and a spoonful there means that I’m adding 200-600+ calories to my diet each day just by eating peanut butter. It’s just not worth it.
After throwing the peanut butter away I took to twitter and facebook asking y’all…
Your responses were overwhelming!
- Peanut butter
- Tortilla chips
- Trail mix
- Ice cream
- Mexican food
So I guess my question is, why do we eat those things if they’re so tempting? Don’t get me wrong, I fully believe that we should be able to have self control and to use moderation in order to eat anything we want, but what if some foods just aren’t controllable?
I think we can create rules to help with tempting foods like only eating social sweets or only using peanut powder, but I often wonder if we just need to be resolved to the fact that some foods are just too tempting.
If I put peanut butter, tortilla chips, or ice cream in my cart it will never end well for me. I’ll finish the jar, eat too much ice cream, and eat chips for dinner. They’re just too tempting and never leave me feeling good at the end of the week.
