I often find myself caught between two worlds. On one hand, as a busy working mom, I look for easy and convenient. On the other hand, I want to live a more wholesome life where I’m able to make more from scratch. I know it doesn’t have to be one way or the other, but I personally find that the wholesome life I desire takes more time than I have at this point in my life.
Earlier this year I worked hard to create a housekeeping routine that would work for my husband and me. As we’re choosing not to spend money on hiring someone to clean our house, we needed to create a cleaning schedule that was realistic and maintainable. We’ve been really happy with our routine and have been able to manage it… for the most part. There are still plenty of days/weeks when things don’t go as planned, but that’s life.
Over the past 6 months, my husband and I have taken ownership over certain chores. I tend to be the one to tackle the kitchen (and he cleans the bathrooms!!), which is fine by me! A few months ago, while cleaning the kitchen, I decided to try something new. Instead of taking out our Swiffer Wet Jet, I decided to pull out my essential oils, our Home Depot bucket, and bought a traditional mop. I tried out a few recipes, made changes that worked for our kitchen (and me), and a couple of weeks later I was left with a super easy, affordable, and wholesome cleaning product!
Last year I started using essential oils in our home, diffusing the oils in our living room, bedroom, and daughter’s room, but I’ve wanted to explore other ways to use oils around the house. Making dish soap and various cleaners has been fun and it really is amazing how much cheaper it is to make these products from scratch. Sure, you have to buy everything upfront, but the amount of return on your initial investment is quite high.
This homemade all natural floor clean is made with 5 ingredients! Rubbing alcohol, distilled white vinegar, lemon essential oil, tea tree essential oil, and water. That’s it!
When I’m ready to clean the kitchen floor I literally pull out my bucket, fill it with hot water, add the vinegar, rubbing alcohol, and essential oils, stir, and start mopping. This floor cleaner works really, really well and it leaves our kitchen smelling amazing! I’ve also used this cleaner on our counter tops, stove, and in our bathrooms! It works really well!
I am still working to find the balance between the wholesome life I really want to live and the reality of the life I live, but I’ve enjoyed making some of our own cleaning products these past few months. It’s easy, affordable, and leaves me feeling good about what I’ve accomplish and how I’ve accomplished it.
