A few years ago I made the decision to stop feeling guilty for the foods I ate and the weight I may have gained while on vacation. Whether I’m traveling to see family, sailing around the Caribbean, or trekking through Europe, vacation is such a treasured time. I love making the most of my vacations and that definitely includes eating foods that aren’t a part of my daily diet.
The agreement I have with myself is to enjoy each moment, to not make my vacation about food, and to allow myself a clean slate when I return home. It’s a win, win really because I come home feeling refreshed and satisfied while also determined to get back on track!
My trip back to Texas last week was no different! I went into my trip excited to see my family and friends, to travel around San Antonio, and to eat some of my favorite “only in Texas” foods. I knew going into the trip that I wanted to have BBQ and Mexican food, so I did! I enjoyed BBQ with my family, soft tacos with my sister, and of course, my mom’s home cooked meals. It was wonderful!
The key for me coming back is to truly allow myself a clean slate. If I let myself wallow over the foods I ate and the weight I may have gained, I just get into a funk and I’m not eager to start fresh. As soon as I return from Texas I created a plan and looked forward! I started with a healthy breakfast consisting of sauteed zucchini, turkey sausage, and scrambled eggs.
For lunch I had a Weight Watchers® Smart Ones® Broccoli and Cheddar Roasted Potatoes, baby carrots, and a side of dressing, which helped me to focus on portion control in my transition back from vacation.
Mid afternoon I enjoyed a Greek yogurt and an orange and then had a delicious dinner when I got home from work!
The key for me to have a clean slate post vacation is to take each meal as it comes and to use portion control! Living this way makes vacations so much more enjoyable and allows me to feel in control of my diet.
Do you have any vacations planned this spring or summer?
